What's actually inside an "agent"?

Four things, and none of them are complicated. A model that does the thinking. Tools it's allowed to use, like your email or your files. Memory for what it keeps between one chat and the next. And a goal, so it can work out the steps on its own.

So which AI tool do I actually need?

Accepted Answer

Depends on the job. Want it reading your Outlook inbox? That takes a direct connector built for it. Most people get stuck comparing tool names before they've even picked the task. Figure out what you actually need to touch first, and the right tool becomes obvious after that.

Can it actually read my inbox, or is it just guessing?

Only once it's actually connected. And even then, there's a real split. Reading the body of an email is easy. Opening a PDF attached to it and understanding what's inside takes extra setup.

I built something that works today. Will it still be right in six months?

Accepted Answer

Not on its own. If the rules or numbers behind your task change, like pricing, a formula, or a policy, the AI won't notice unless something's checking. The fix is a scheduled check that compares what changed against what the AI is using, and updates it automatically.

Why does it seem to get worse the longer I talk to it?

It's carrying too much, the same way a computer starts to lag when its memory fills up. Every message adds more for it to hold onto, and past a point, it starts to glitch. Starting fresh with a short summary works better than dragging the whole conversation forward.

Probably not forever. The current pricing is a lot like the early days of Uber, cheap rides to win people over before prices rise. It's easy to burn fifty dollars in one evening just messing around. Using a strong AI to plan the task properly the first time saves more money than picking a cheap one upfront, because going back and forth afterward is what actually costs the most.

People keep telling me to "build a skill." What does that actually mean?

A clear start, a clear end, a way to check if it worked, and real examples of right and wrong. That's what separates a good one from a vague one. Anyone could read your instructions if they wanted to. What actually protects your edge is being able to act on whatever the skill produces.
